Set a new kind of resolution for 2009

Make resolutions on how you want to live, feel and be this year

Have you made your New Year's resolutions yet? Do you have a list of goals that are either new or continuations from last year? What do they include? Losing weight, exercising more, studying harder, getting that new job, saving money, working on a relationship?

When I ask people about their goals, they tend to list these types of things. Our resolutions are mostly about things that are items we want to obtain, accomplish, or do in our lives. I am all about setting and working with these types of goals - keeping a good goal list is like having a navigational map for a trip.

But this article is not about these types of resolutions or goals. This year, I am encouraging you to also set some different, and even more important, resolutions this year. Make some resolutions about how you want to live, feel, and be this year.

These types of resolutions or intentions are like containers for all of our other goals and actions. They set the context for the way we want to experience our lives while we go about getting to those accomplishments we desire. They set us up to have more meaning and joy on a day to day basis. The notion is that there is no need to wait until we accomplish our resolutions to live more like we want to. We can remind ourselves to feel happier and more satisfied on a daily basis, no matter where we are with our other goals. Set your Intention Resolutions by following these steps:

1. Set aside some quiet time to consider these questions and quickly jot down the words that come into your mind. The idea is to identify qualities and feelings you want in your life.

How do you want to feel on a daily basis?

Describe how you feel when you feel your best.

How do you want to be in the world?

If you listed things like competent, secure, happy, content, joyful, relaxed, loved, safe, grateful, positive, connected to others, supported, and healthy, you are on the right track. Try to identify the FEELINGS or STATES you want to have most in your life.

2. Write one or more intention statements for how you want to live life this year. These are statements about how you will APPROACH daily life. Write them in the positive present tense. Here are some ideas:

* I remember each day to be grateful for what I have.

* I make a positive difference in the lives of everyone I meet.

* I focus on happiness daily.

* I look for the positive in all situations.

* I feel happy and healthy.

* I smile often.

* I ask for support and protect my daily quiet time.

* I am taking care of me.

* I give and receive love easily.

* I have some fun every day.

3. Post your intention statements by your bathroom mirror, on your steering wheel, or in some other place you frequently look to remind yourself of your new resolutions for 2009. Read and say your intention statements daily, and put them into practice. It is free and easy to do many of these; they require no money, little or no time, and can make a great difference in your daily quality of life.
