Valencia's Faith Anumba (32) jumps up for a rebound against El Segundo's Kendra Zindler, right, as Eagle Lauren Villaneuva, left, watches.

Teams are going to key on a couple of Valencia girls basketball varsity veterans this season.

They're going to deny point guard Lindsey Hill passing lanes.

They're going to double-team post player Starla Wright.

But they might forget about Danielle Cavanagh.

Cavanagh, a second-year varsity player, showed Thursday night in a 74-44 Valencia win over visiting El Segundo High that it might not be a good idea.

The 6-foot-tall swing player burned the Eagles for 18 points, 14 in a first half that wasn't even close.

"I'll be open. I'll be ready," Cavanagh said on if teams leave her open. "(My teammates) kept getting me the ball and I kept taking every opportunity I got."

The big shooter teed off on the Eagles (4-11) thanks to a size advantage and a soft shot.

The Vikings (13-2) led 17-6 after one quarter, then built on the advantage with a 9-0 run to begin the second quarter.

El Segundo was never in the game, even in the second half when Valencia rested its starters for the fourth quarter.

Most impressive from Valencia, against the lesser competition, was the Vikings' ability to score.

The Vikings scored 27 points in the second quarter and 44 in the first half, on the way to a 44-17 lead at the break.

El Segundo's bombs-away approach netted few positive results in the final frame.

Eagle guard Erin Sato hit the first two 3-point attempts in the quarter.

El Segundo missed the final 10 attempts from beyond the arc from then on.

Lauren Sato led her team with 12 points, draining three 3-pointers in the third quarter.

Valencia head coach Jerry Mike said he doesn't subscribe to the thinking that lesser competition going into a big game affects a team.

The Vikings host Saugus Tuesday to open up Foothill League play.

"Everyone was scoring," Mike said of his team. "(El Segundo) was tough and scrappy. You had to secure rebounds. The ball was never really safe."

Lauren Spargo was the only other Viking in double figures. She added 10 points.
