To the Editor:

It is not often that our law enforcement officials are recognized for their hard work and professionalism. For this reason, I felt compelled to write this letter of appreciation.

On Friday, March 7, at about 8:30 p.m., I was pulled over in an area of our city that unfortunately has an above average crime rate in comparison to other parts of our city. I was pulled over for having expired tags on my vehicle. The officer who came to my window clearly explained why he had pulled me over and asked for my license and registration. To my horror, I realized at that moment that I had forgotten my wallet in my wife's car, hence no driver license! Expired tags, no license, my four kids in the car - this was not looking good.

At that time, I was asked to step out of the car and place my hands behind my back as the officer held my wrists together and asked the usual questions. The officer then led me to the hood of his patrol car and gently patted me down for weapons. After finding nothing, he let go of my wrists and began to ask for my personal information.

After the officer made sure that all my information checked out, he thanked me for my cooperation and with a firm warning to get the car tags taken care of, he bid me a good night and let me go.

Besides feeling embarrassed, not once was I made to feel like a criminal. Both officers treated me with respect, dignity and gentleness. To the Sheriff's deputies who pulled me over on Friday, March 7, thanks for a job well done! May God grant you safety as you protect ours.
