Would-be gumshoes

Educators Maureen Teague and Jane D'Anna wanted to introduce a new program, a school newspaper, that would engage the Canyon Springs Elementary School student body in many ways.

The Santa Clarita Valley Education Foundation gave them the materials to produce the newspaper.

The Signal gave the students an opportunity to learn what a reporter does.

These "would-be gumshoes" are a good example of what dedicated teachers, a foundation and someone like Brian Charles and The Signal can do to enhance the educational experience. A collaboration in its greatest form.

The Santa Clarita Literacy & Arts Festival, where Canyon Springs students received their tutorial and first assignments from Brian, is another example of a community supporting education.

The festival was presented by the SCV Education Foundation and the city of Santa Clarita, but its success is the product of time and talent donated by individuals and organizations that make up our community.

People who believe that literacy is the foundation of education and that arts should play a significant role in our lives. As one of the event directors, they have my deepest gratitude.

It is mainly through parents, teachers and administrators that children receive their education.

However, it takes more than their hard work to provide a well-rounded education, it takes a community.
