SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors say a mother and her adult son have pleaded guilty to abandoning 30 abused dogs in a Southern California park and were sentenced to probation.

A district attorney's statement says Floreliza Aguillo Escano pleaded guilty Tuesday to animal abandonment, mistreatment and neglect. Her 26-year-old son James Alambra pleaded guilty to animal abandonment.

The pair left two kennels stuffed with 30 dogs under trees at San Remo Park in Laguna Hills in May.

Investigators say the dogs were stacked atop one another without food or water.

The dogs, ranging in age from 6 months to 6 years old, showed signs of neglect, including matted fur and ingrown toenails.

They were both ordered to undergo intensive mental health counseling. They are not allowed to own, live with or possess any animals.
