Activities

The SCV Senior Center is located at 22900 Market St., Newhall. For a detailed monthly calendar, call the center at 661-259-9444. All the following activities will occur at the SCV Senior Center, 1 p.m., in rooms A1-A2 unless otherwise indicated.

Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m., blood-pressure checks held, Activity Room 6. Every other Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon, hearing screenings held, Supportive Services modular.

Free spine education program

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital’s free Spine Education Program offers valuable information on how you can take better care of your spine, including lifestyle changes that may help with pain management and prevent future injuries. Classes meet 5-6 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month at Henry Mayo’s Ambulatory Care Center, 25751 McBean Parkway #310, Valencia. Seating is limited. Info: 661-253-8959.

Community dance

Third Friday of every month, 7:30-10 p.m.

Fibromyalgia support group

Senior Orchestra seeks players

Functional fitness

At 8:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, we’re movin’ and groovin’, steppin’ and sweatin’ to the beat with ACE Certified Exercise Specialist Linda Bennett. We’re the new and improved “middle age” 50-plus active adults.

The program encompasses functional fitness — moves are designed to simulate ADLs (activities of daily living), and sports moves like golf, tennis, and skiing. We do cardiovascular training, muscle and bone building, core stabilization and spatial awareness for balance — all within one hour.

If you’re not quite ready for the fast and furious fitness, at 9:45 a.m. there is a great 30-minute chair class that will suit you. Call the Senior Center at 661-259-9444, or Linda Bennett at 661-713-0945.

Recreation and leisure

Bridge: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, 9 a.m.

Canasta: Monday, 1-4 p.m.

Duplicate Bridge: Tuesday, 6:45-10 p.m.

Food Bingo: Friday, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Swing Jazz Club: fourth Sunday of every month, 1:30-5 p.m.

Senior cinema

Second Wednesday of the month, 2 p.m. in the dining room, $1 donation, 50-cent popcorn, drawing for prizes.

Personal development

Creative Writing: Tuesday 1 p.m.

Live, Love & Laugh social group: Friday 1 p.m. Explore the lighter side of life.
