Letter: Women’s Conference excellent, despite protest

In regards to The Signal’s coverage of Congressman Buck McKeon’s Women’s Conference on Sept. 8:

I can’t believe you took such a distorted angle by blowing the protesters way out of proportion. Mr. McKeon took time and effort to put on a very worthwhile (and decidedly apolitical) event for women in our community.

The point — and the real story here — should have been that our representative decided to reach out to the women in his district by helping them learn about important topics like becoming financially secure, job and interview skills, and succeeding in business.

I was there, and I found it quite informative and inspiring. I, for one, can appreciate that my congressman made it a point to put on a program to enrich the lives of women.

I think it’s embarrassing that The Signal highlighted a couple of protesters who tried to hijack the event and make a spectacle of themselves. McKeon was even gracious enough to publicly and politely respond, yet they continued to hound him and his staff and didn’t even participate in the rest of the conference.

It was all completely out of place and inappropriate for such an occasion. There was no need to put a negative spin on this conference. It’s a shame that it dominated the story.
