Letter: Proposal to fix our political system

Ways to keep American politicians honest are twofold:

1. Make it a law that they can only serve one term of six years.

2. Allow only $100 in campaign contributions per person or company for each election.

In that way, American politicians would not have another election to worry about and they would not have any big financial contributors to appease.

Politicians spend too much of their time trying to get re-elected and not enough time tending to the American populace. In addition, they fret about who are the large financial lenders in their campaign efforts.

If a two-thirds majority of the electorate thinks the politician is doing a bad job in office, the politician could be voted out before the six-year term expires.

This would apply at all levels of American politics. A U.S. congressman would only serve one term of six years. No person or company could contribute more than $100 in any one term.

Such changes would greatly increase the way our politicians do business. Then, and only then, could America take the global lead in all issues of human value.

Needless to say, making such changes would be extremely difficult because it would require another amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

To make such changes, Americans would need to bring out the greatest thinkers as well as our greatest writers. We need to get on it right away.
