Forgery

Lyons Avenue, Newhall

Sheriff’s deputies are still trying to find the person who forged the signature of a Chatsworth businessman who runs a sports medicine enterprise on Lyons Avenue.

The forger obtained $6,746.47 by cashing the bogus check at a bank on Lyons Avenue near the sports medicine business, according to the report filed by deputies Tuesday.

They wrote: “Persons unknown forged the victim’s signature on a check made out to the victim’s business and cashed the check.”

An employee at the business told deputies that several checks — including several from Medicare — were stolen from the business’s mailbox June 23.

Petty theft

Beacon Street, Castaic

A Castaic woman had her purse stolen from her car sometime between 7 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Her $50 leather purse contained two types of prescription medication, $5 in cash, a $150 pair of gold-colored Rayban sunglasses and a medical card, according a report filed by sheriff’s deputies.

The woman had parked her white Jeep Cherokee on Beacon Street in Castaic. She reportedly told deputies the rear window in her Jeep was broken and that “the suspect could have easily reached in and grabbed her purse without setting off the vehicle’s alarm.”

Deputies noted in their report: “The victim was not going to report the incident but was told by her health insurance company they needed her to file a police report in order to refill her prescription and obtain a new insurance card.”

Misappropriation of lost property

McBean Parkway near Valencia Boulevard

At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to a trash fire on in the area of McBean and Valencia.

They found a homeless man cooking his dinner on the makeshift barbecue, they wrote in their report. When they searched the man’s “homeless encampment” trying to find his identification, they found a black wallet.

When asked about it, the homeless man said, “He had some people over last night and one of them must have left it,” according to deputies.

Deputies arrested the man after contacting the wallet’s owner, who told them he had lost the wallet somewhere in Santa Clarita four months ago.

Arroyo Parkway Drive near McBean Parkway, Valencia

At 7:45 a.m. Thursday, deputies received reports of a man “in the street” on Arroyo near McBean, deputies reported. When they responded to the location they found a 5-foot-7 180-pound transient sitting on a curb “swaying back and forth.”

They wrote in their report that they smelled an odor of alcohol “emitting from his person.” When the man was unable to stand or tell deputies where he lived, he was arrested and booked at the Santa Clarita station.

Sept. 21

Drunk in public

Las Mananitas Drive, Valencia

Shortly after midnight Friday, deputies were called to a house on Las Mananitas for report of a man banging on the front door. When they got to the home, they found a 5-foot-6, 190-pound man on the front lawn.

“He swayed and staggered as he walked toward me,” one of the deputies reported in his log. He also wrote that he smelled “the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath and person.”

The man told them: “He and some friends were out drinking, and then walked home. He said his friend lived at the location. But they would not let him in.”

The homeowner who phoned the sheriff said she does not know the suspect. Since he was unable to care for his own safety, deputies took him into custody and charged him.
