VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) — Pressure is intensifying for an independent investigation into the fatal shooting by Vallejo police earlier this month of a man outside his home — the city's fifth fatal officer-involved shooting since May.

Vallejo Mayor Osby Davis asked the state Attorney General's Office this week to launch an inquiry into the Sept. 2 shooting of 23-year-old Mario Romero.

Police say Romero was shot as he reached for a gun while stepping out of a car in front of his home. The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun.

Local community leaders, meanwhile, want the U.S. Justice Department to investigate all the recent Vallejo police shootings.

Vallejo police Sgt. Jeff Bassett said the department welcomes any additional investigations.

The Vallejo City Council was forced to adjourn its meeting early on Tuesday night after protesters angry over Romero's shooting caused a disruption.
