Hart High girls volleyball faced a huge challenge against reigning CIF-L.A. City Section Division I champions Granada Hills on Thursday at Hart High School.

Yet in a consistent match, the Indians pulled away with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-10 victory.

“We went into this game tonight prepping mentally as well as physically for a tough competitor,” said Hart High head coach Mary Keen. “We wanted to keep the momentum on our side. We wanted to make a statement, as Granada Hills has always been a traditionally tough team.”

Hart (4-1 overall) has seen Granada Hills consistently over the last five years in preleague action, but had not beaten the Highlanders.

Until Thursday.

“We knew it was going to be a challenge, knowing Granada’s potential,” Keen said. “But we kept a lot of control the entire time.”

Kathryn Cambra was the kill leader for Hart with 12 kills.

She was followed by Chase Tengberg with seven kills.

On the defensive side, Kate Baker had 20 digs, while Maryah Richberg’s blocking came at critical times during the match. She had six blocks and three kills.

Keen was impressed with the level of play at which her team performed.

“We were consistent from the start. Our normal pattern is a roller-coaster effect, but we were up consistently three to five points,” Keen said. “It didn’t rattle them. I saw a lot of confidence.”

Granada Hills went 24-12 last season, and defeated Hart 3-2 on Sept. 9, 2011.

The Highlanders defeated El Camino Real in last year’s Division I City Section final.

Hart opens up Foothill League play against West Ranch on Sept. 27.
