TULARE, Calif. (AP) — A Tulare County jury has found a 20-year-old man guilty of murdering the grandmother who raised him by stabbing her more than 50 times.

Jurors returned a conviction of second-degree murder against Raul Viveros after two days of deliberations. His maternal grandmother, 71-year-old Soledad Hinojos, was found dead in the Tulare home they shared two years ago.

Viveros was arrested the next morning near Bakersfield after Hinojos' car was found abandoned on Interstate 5.

During the week-long trial, Viveros' defense lawyer tried to cast doubt on his guilt by reminding jurors that police had not found a murder weapon or the grandmother's blood inside the abandoned car.

Viveros faces a sentence of 26 years to life in state prison.
