This year, The Signal and presenting sponsor Mercedes-Benz of Valencia embarked upon the world’s first King of Happy Hour Contest, pitting eight local restaurants against each other for the coveted title, “King of Happy Hour” in the Santa Clarita Valley. The contest began on Aug. 7, and every two weeks the NCAA tournament-style bracket was narrowed from eight to four to two, with the finalists competing in a one-week showdown for the title.

Restaurant patrons across the Santa Clarita Valley were encouraged to vote for their favorite restaurant for happy hour by going to The-Signal.com, registering and voting during every round. Each restaurant was provided with coasters and posters to promote the contest, and all registered voters were eligible to win gift certificates to the restaurants vying for the title. Weekly drawings were held, with the grand prize winning voter receiving one $25 gift certificate to each restaurant. Santa Clarita has some fantastic happy hours, and this contest served as a great excuse to find some new favorites every day of the week.

The original eight competing restaurants were Frankies New York Italian Restaurant, Big Wangs, The Tilted Kilt, Schooners, Gameday, Mulligans, The Tailgate and Margaritas. Each restaurant was able to promote their Happy Hour menu and drink specials on the King of Happy Hour website, www.the-signal.com/happyhour.

The competing restaurants were matched by random draw as follows: The Tilted Kilt vs. Frankies, Schooners vs. Margaritas, Mulligans vs. Big Wangs and Gameday vs. The Tailgate. After two weeks of intense voting on laptops and smartphones across the Santa Clarita Valley, the Final Four were crowned by popular vote.

The Final Four were Schooners, Frankies, Gameday and Mulligans. Check out their promotional videos at www.the-signal.com and see how much fun happy hour can be! Like any good tournament, there were some upsets in the competition, with some restaurants implementing social media campaigns to spread the word of their early evening specials.

Representing both the diversity of venue sizes and the commonality of great atmospheres and specials in Santa Clarita, Frankies and Gameday were voted as finalists, with Frankies, the quaint, family-owned New York Italian Restaurant, emerging victorious, to be crowned the Santa Clarita Valley’s first King of Happy Hour. Perhaps aiding their cause, Frankie’s added a special Power Hour to their menu just for the contest, filled with $1 appetizers and beer, from 3 p.m. to 4 pm, to go along with delectable food and drink specials from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. each weekday.

So, when you’re craving a late afternoon or early evening snack, or you just want a cold beverage to wind down the day, remember that you have plenty of fantastic options in the Santa Clarita Valley. If you want to try the King of Happy Hour, go to 24025 Newhall Ranch Road and find Frankies, an authentic Italian restaurant that will bring you back again and again.

The Signal would like to send out special congratulations to our faithful reader Michele Orr, who was the lucky winner of the Grand Prize drawing for the King of Happy Hour contest.  Michele won $25 gift certificates to each of the eight restaurants participating in the contest.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this contest a great success. We anticipate its valiant return in 2013.
