Venture capitalist Brad Feld spoke to SCV Startup on April 11. The local startup group will host a 54-hour Startup Weekend event at the Westfield Valencia Town Center on Oct. 5.

Participants in a business startup event slated for October will camp out in Westfield Valencia Town Center.

Startup Weekend, a 54-hour entrepreneurial event, will take place in Westfield storefront property on Town Center Drive, said Erick Arndt, founder of SCV Startup, the group organizing the event.

Startup Weekend is a Seattle-based nonprofit that helps create events across the world for designers, developers, marketers and entrepreneurs to pitch product or company ideas and then form teams to actually launch the product or company by the end of the weekend.

SCV Startup needed an open space where teams could work around the clock. Arndt estimates that about 80 people will be participating or watching the event, which will be held from Oct. 5 to Oct. 7.

“The Westfield team understands the importance of this event for Santa Clarita and they came through big time,” Arndt said. “Westfield  is really supporting the event and they’re letting us have it for free. That’s a big deal.

The storefront was the former location of Diane’s Beach Wear, which has since moved into the Patio’s. Arndt said the beach and vacation elements remaining in the space will contribute a festive atmosphere for the weekend event.

“It’s absolutely a perfect showcase for an event of this magnitude,” he said. Since launching, Startup Weekend has hosted 672 events worldwide, and has more than 300 in the planning process.

About half of the spots for business people, programmers and designers have been filled already, Arndt said. Most of the business-related spots have been filled, but there’s always a demand for more designers at any Startup Weekend event, he said.

The event — the first Startup Weekend to be held in Santa Clarita — still needs “the triangle of sponsorship, coaches and judges,” Arndt said. Most of the confirmed sponsors, coaches and judges are not from the SCV, but rather are coming in from the Los Angeles area.

“The level of support from Santa Monica and L.A. has been great,” Arndt said. “We have so many people that are traveling here.” Half of the registrants so far are also from outside of the SCV, he said.

Jenna Vandenberg, marketing director for Westfield, confirmed the event, adding, “We are excited to host Startup Weekend and help local entrepreneurs.”
