Saugus High runner Kaylin Mahoney displays the medal she won for finishing first Nov. 29 in the CIF State Division II Cross Country Championships. Mahoney was the Foothill League and CIF-SS Division II champion.

Upon arrival from Oregon, Kaylin Mahoney made her way off the flight and through the airport in a wheelchair.

She gave everyhing she had in 2008 for her Saugus girls cross country team to succeed.

So after the Nike Cross Nationals Dec. 6 in Portland, Ore., her body finally gave out.

A stress reaction has limited Mahoney since.

Here we are in January and she's still on crutches.

Mahoney should be back to 100 percent soon.

The injury shows the example she set.

Just a sophomore, Mahoney followed a stellar season in which she was named the state's best freshman, by making an argument that she's its best sophomore.

Mahoney posted the state's third best time at the Nov. 29 CIF State Cross Country Championships at Fresno's Woodward Park.

Her 17 minutes, 34 seconds, though, gave her a state championship in the Division II race.

Though she was third overall, the two better times that day were from seniors.

This makes Mahoney California's best prep runner going into the 2009 season.

But forget about next season.

Reflect on the season that was.

Not only did Mahoney lead the Saugus girls cross country team in winning its third straight state title, she established herself as one of the greatest runners in this valley's history with an unforgettable 2008.

In the second Foothill League meet on Oct. 16, Mahoney ran a personal best 17:07.

On Oct. 25 at the 61st annual Reebok Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, she won the race in 17:13.

Mahoney finished first at the league finals, the CIF-Southern Section Division II Prelims and the finals.

She came in at 17:01 at the finals.

Mahoney finished 11th on Dec. 6 at the Nike Cross Nationals.

There's no question, Kaylin Mahoney is The Signal's selection as the 2008 All-Santa Clarita Valley Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.

Mahoney will only get better, too.

The Saugus girls cross country team has enough to be the state's favorite in 2009.

Mahoney is the individual favorite.

Watch out California.

Which also means, watch out everyone in Oregon.
