BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a pilot performing aerobatics was killed after ejecting from a home-built plane that crashed in San Diego County.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer says the pilot's parachute apparently malfunctioned.

CalFire Capt. Mike Mohler says the crash Saturday afternoon at Borrego Valley Airport occurred while the pilot was performing stunt maneuvers. The pilot was the only person on board.

Kenitzer says the single-engine aircraft was severely damaged in the crash.

An FAA registry reports the fixed-wing plane, built in 2009, is registered to Edward R. Moore of San Diego.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

The airport is in Borrego Springs, a desert resort town about 80 miles northeast of San Diego.
