PALMDALE — Cade Apsay stole the show Friday night by throwing for a school record 405 yards and scoring six total touchdowns to lead Canyon football to a 56-27 win against Pete Knight High at Knight High.

With Cowboys running backs Daniel Castro and Dominic Pennucci combining for an additional 179 yards and two touchdowns, Canyon’s offense was near unstoppable.

Such balance has allowed the team to run 141 plays, gain 1,184 yards and score 112 points in the past two games.
However, defensive miscues of the Cowboys (3-0) have been prominent this year.

On Friday night, the Hawks (1-2) had success by way of the big play, beginning with a 62-yard touchdown run by Knight junior running back Alonte Riley to even the score at 7-7 with 7:07 remaining in the first quarter.

Down 27-7 with 1:53 remaining in the first half, Hawks senior quarterback Tony Dawson found Riley for 40 yards to set up an eventual touchdown that brought the score to 27-13.

On the opening play of the second half, the Hawks, who were held scoreless last Friday, scored via a 96-yard kickoff return by Bobby Franklin to bring their score within 7 points.

Shortly after, Apsay put the Hawks away with three touchdown passes on three consecutive drives — two going to sophomore wide receiver Liam Cabrera and another to standout senior wideout Drew Wolitarsky, who finished the night with nine receptions for 159 yards.

Apsay was 23-of-39 and added a 5-yard rushing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
