Violent crime was up in Los Angeles County nearly 4 percent during the first eight months of 2012 compared to the same time period in 2011, but down more than 20 percent compared to five years ago, according to Sheriff’s Department statistics released Friday.

In the Santa Clarita Valley, as in the rest of Los Angeles County, criminal homicide was down during the first eight months of this year. Forcible rape and aggravated assault were both up. The results for robbery were mixed.

Countywide, criminal homicide was down 5 percent during the first eight months of 2012 compared to 2011, but the other major violent crimes — forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault — were up, although none as much as 5 percent. Compared to 2007 year-to-date numbers, all violent crimes in the county were down in 2012 from 20 percent to nearly 38 percent.

In the Santa Clarita Valley, no criminal homicides were reported during the first eight months of this year compared to three last year through August. In 2007, the Santa Clarita Valley had seen five criminal homicides by the end of August.

Forcible rape was up 37 percent in the city and 171 percent in unincorporated county areas through August 2012 compared to August 2011, with 23 incidents reported so far this year valleywide compared to 14 in 2011. In 2007, 25 forcible rapes had been reported in the Santa Clarita Valley through the end of August.

Robbery was up 45 percent in the city but down 27 percent in the county through August compared to August 2011, with 85 incidents total reported in the Santa Clarita Valley this year compared to 68 last year. In 2007, the number stood at 102 through the end of August valleywide.

Aggravated assaults totaled 211 so far this year in the Santa Clarita Valley compared to 157 at this time last year and 28 percent in the city. The total was 205 in the valley through August 2007.

The county Sheriff’s Department keeps track of crime numbers in each of its station areas and compiles them for a monthly tally, comparing the numbers to those a year ago and five years ago.
