LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man suspected of murder was arrested Friday after he led Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies on a chase and pushed the female victim from his car as he fled, authorities said.

Sheriff's investigators said Juan Diego Valencia, 30, was arrested after he barricaded himself inside an apartment in Hawthorne.

A sheriff's deputy tried to pull Valencia over for an unspecified violation at about 11:15 p.m. Thursday. The green Mercury Cougar stopped and the deputy saw a flash inside the car as it sped away, said sheriff's Lt. Holly Francisco.

Valencia pushed 24-year-old Selene Mayoral out of the car in nearby Lynwood during the chase, authorities said. She was found with a gunshot wound to her upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the suspect knew the victim, but their relationship is unclear. Authorities didn't say what the motive for the killing was. A weapon was recovered.

Valencia is being held on $1 million bail.
