Violence ushers in the new year

Investigations into separate stabbings

One man was shot in the chest and another stabbed multiple times in separate Canyon Country incidents on the first day of the new year, officials said.

Investigators with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station are looking for a gunman and someone who stabbed a man numerous times just 24 hours into 2009.

Jose Campos, 46, was listed in fair condition at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, according to spokeswoman Patricia Aidem.

Campos was shot once in the chest early Thursday, sheriff's Sgt. Ron Price said.

Sheriff's deputies are looking for one suspect, identified by Price as Seferino Benjamin Grajeda, 30, now wanted for attempted murder.

"We wrote up an attempted murder report on this individual," Price said.

A warrant for Grajeda's arrest was not immediately necessary, Price added, because the suspect is already wanted by the Los Angeles Police Department on a bail warrant.

Grajeda is wanted by the LAPD for an assault with a deadly weapon charge, he said.

Shortly before 5 a.m., Grajeda allegedly became involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, the mother of the couple's three children and who is also Campos' daughter, at a residence on Grace Lane.

"Allegedly, Seferino Grajeda was in some kind of a domestic altercation with Campos' daughter," Price explained. "The father responded to the address and got in the middle of the dispute.

"Grajeda pulled a gun out of his waistband and shot Campos once in the chest. He then fled the location in an unknown direction."

Sheriff's deputies believe Grajeda might be driving a burgundy Cadillac Escalade with no license plates.

In a separate incident following a party on New Year's Eve, a man was found bleeding from numerous wounds, Price said.

Esteban German, 25, was treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, he said.

"At a party in Canyon Country, this man went outside to smoke," Price said. "After an unknown time, his family went out to look for him.

"It was a situation where someone said ‘Hey, anybody seen Esteban?' No one had seen him. Then they go into the garage and find him on the floor bleeding from stab wounds."

Sheriff's deputies cited in their report that the victim had been "drinking a lot."

Santa Clarita detectives are still trying to identify the killers in two murders last fall.

On Sept. 26, Alonso Andrade was shot and killed in a robbery attempt during morning rush hour on Lyons Avenue at Apple Street.

Just 10 days earlier and less than a mile from the Andrade shooting, Anthony Lombardi was shot and killed.

He was found with gunshot wounds in the upper torso and his body, facing backward, draped half outside and half inside the driver's door of his Honda Accord coupe in the driveway of his home.
