Ignoring new cell-phone laws

A new "no texting while driving" law took effect Jan. 1? So what?

Even though we have a "no cell-phone use while driving" law, I see many people ignoring it. I am quite surprised to see how many actually do ignore this law.

I drive a motorcycle on a daily basis and always ride in the defensive state of mind. One can spot these cell-phone-using drivers easily.

I've been forced to take evasive action many times from drivers on cell phones.

The light turns green and it takes them a bit longer to realize it; they change lanes not knowing there is a vehicle or motorcycle occupying the lane already; they are the slow drivers holding up traffic behind them; they all of a sudden brake to turn into a driveway they almost missed, doing so without signaling.

I could go on.

Many of these offenders you cannot see at all because they are hiding behind illegally tinted windows. The fines are not stiff enough for these offenders, so therefore many take the chance to try and get away with it.

Unfortunately, someone some day will pay the price. I just hope it's not me.
