Curing hang-overs with soup and bowl games

The confetti is swept up and all that’s left to celebrate are the football games sponsored by companies you’ve never heard of. But first you’ve got to get rid of that throbbing hangover.

Good morning. It’s New Year’s Day.

While there’s no cure for bad football games, many Santa Clarita Valley residents claim to have the best New Year’s Day hangover remedies.

Una Mas restaurant in Canyon Country is mixing up a delectable soup on New Year’s Day, said franchisee Rama Iyengar.

“It’s a tortilla, tomato and lemon soup made in chicken broth,” he said. “It has everything you need to cure a hangover.”

The soup goes on early in the morning and simmers all day for revelers to enjoy even when it’s not New Year’s Day, Iyengar said. “When it’s cold (the customers) order plenty of it,” he said.

Menudo is a traditional Mexican soup that includes everything in the refrigerator a sober person wouldn’t eat, said Leticia Hansen, owner of Hacienda Don Cuco’s restaurant in Canyon Country.

“Our menudo has tripe, pork, hominy and pigs feet cooked all together,” she said.

If the combination of throw-away ingredients doesn’t make the hangover victim throw up, the mixture of fat and broth helps stop the headache, she said.

Hansen isn’t clear about the science.

“It’s something we’ve grown up with. I guess it’s like Americans eating greasy hamburgers to cure hangovers,” she said.

Menudo isn’t the only hangover remedy Hacienda Don Cuco’s is serving up today.

Beer Michelada is a roundabout way to cure a hangover, Hansen said.

“The mixture of beer, Clamato and lemon juice changes your body chemistry,” she said.

“The easiest way to avoid a hangover is not to get one,” said Kerry Malony, owner of The Vu, a bar in Newhall.

Party-goers need to leave a pitcher of water by the side of their beds after a night out, she said. The other step to curing a hangover, however, is more involved.

“Puke and drink more water,” she said.

The Vu is open today.

“We have the football package and all the games,” Malony said.

What The Vu doesn’t have is food.

For families and people who stayed home to watch the New Year come in, there is the Way Station in Newhall.

“This is a family place for people who don’t feel like cooking on New Year’s Day,” owner Jeri Bronstrup said. She expects a large crowd to file in when the open their doors at 7:30 a.m.

Hacienda Don Cuco’s is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Way Station is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Una Mas is open from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Vu is open from noon to 2 a.m.
