SOUTH EL MONTE (AP) — A couple wanted for shooting a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy before embarking on a series of carjackings on Sunday was identified as a man who recently escaped from jail with the help of his wife.

Darnell Washington, 24, escaped from a San Bernardino County jail on Tuesday with the help of his 25-year-old wife, Tania Washington, the sheriff's department said.

They came under the scrutiny of a deputy who spotted them in a car that matched the description of a vehicle that was reported stolen, authorities said.

As the deputy waited for assistance, the husband got out of the car and fired at him. The deputy was wounded during an ensuing shootout, but was treated and released from a hospital.

Authorities said the couple fled and were suspected of carjacking at least two more vehicles.

Darnell Washington was in custody on charges of robbery and receiving stolen property and was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 14 before the jail bust. He was described as armed and dangerous, with a tattoo on his right forearm with the words "by any means."
