A tractor trailer and at least five cars were involved in the traffic collision at about 2 p.m. today that sent nine to the hospital and forced closure of all five northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Highway 138 for more than two hours Wednesday, said Judy Gish, Caltrans public information officer.

An L.A. County Fire helicopter transported three critically injured victims to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, he said.

Six more victims were taken by ambulance to hospitals in Kern County, Harrelson said.

CHP officers closed all five lanes of the northbound Interstate 5 at the State Route 138 interchange at 1 p.m. and reopened them at 3:45 p.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Jose Nunez.

CHP escorted cars through the Grapevine due to heavy fog, he said. It is unclear whether fog was a factor in the accident, he said.
