The Santa Clarita City Council appointed Michael Cruz to the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission and Gary Richard Choppe to the Arts Commission after a short dispute over city procedures governing commission appointments.

The unanimously approved appointments came after City Attorney Joseph Montes read council members the current policy, which states a council member must choose alternative appointees if their first choices are rejected.

TimBen Boydston, who nominated Al Ferdman for the Parks Commission and Val Thomas to the Arts Commission, asked his colleagues to reconsider their previous rejection of his first choices during the Tuesday night council meeting.

“How many times are you supposed to come back and hear ‘no’?” Mayor Frank Ferry responded after Boydston pressed to show a video he said depicts Ferdman praising the city.

Boydston’s other nominations — Diane Trautman for the Planning Commission and James V. Farley to the commission that oversees open space spending — were approved in July.
