SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego County Sheriff's deputy has fatally shot an inmate who charged at him during a hospital exam for wounds he sustained from jail fight.

Police Capt. Terry McManus said the 45-year-old inmate died by the time he was wheeled to the trauma center at UC San Diego Medical Center on Saturday.

McManus said the inmate was injured in a violent fight that began when he attacked deputies checking on him at the downtown Central Jail. At the hospital, he broke free of his restraints as he was about to undergo a CT scan.

McManus said the inmate was shot after he swung a chain and charged at a deputy in the room.

The deputies involved in the jail fight and the hospital shooting were treated for minor injuries.
