Riley Lyon, of Valencia, spent her summer not at the pool but in a third world country. She teamed up with Humanitarian Experience for Youth and 17 other youth from around the United States to build a library and counseling center in Tonga.

From June 12 to June 30, the youth spent long days doing manual labor and coming to know the meaning of poverty.

Humanitarian Experience for Youth is a nonprofit service organization that offers humanitarian expeditions to youth ages 16-19. Expeditions are limited to three weeks of service. Typically, one day is set aside for tourist activities, but the experience is designed to serve others in poverty-stricken areas of the world.
