Eugenia Weston was born in the San Fernando Valley and moved to the Santa Clarita Valley at age 12.

“My family moved here before anyone really lived here,” she said.

Weston is a graduate of William S. Hart High School and the first licensed makeup artist in the state of California.

She found her passion for makeup at 13 when she went into her mother’s makeup drawer and started to experiment with her makeup.

“I loved how it looked on my skin,” she said. “I was also very fascinated with faces. I loved fashion, makeup and beauty.”

As a teenager in the late 1960s and early 1970s she worked the cosmetics counter at the Thrifty Drug Store on Lyons Avenue in Newhall.

“That was the only drug store and Safeway was the only grocery store,” she said. “Lyons Avenue was basically a two-lane road with no sidewalks.”

Weston is a self-taught makeup artist. She also recieved the first cosmetician license in the state of California in 1977.

“I was working professionally before the state required licenses,” she said.

Weston found her life’s work when a friend convinced her to attend a job interview at the Jon Peters salon in Woodland Hills.

She was introduced to the salon’s makeup artist, Bobbe Joy. Weston was hired.

“I didn’t know that people would pay that much money to have their eyebrows done and their makeup done,” she said. “Bobbe taught me how to do eyebrows.”

Weston found herself working seven days a week, at Jon Peters and at Thrifty.

When Beverly Hills hairdresser Geri Cusenza founded Sebastian International she invited Weston to create her own makeup line for the new salon.

“That’s how Senna was born,” she said.

The Senna logo is a harlequin which was inspired from an art book that belonged to Weston’s mother.

“I’ve always loved theater and drama” Weston said. “I named the harlequin Senna. She symbolizes beauty, illusion and transformation.”

After five years at Sebastian Weston founded the first makeup studio in Tarzana, Senna Cosmetics.

“My training is more in art than in cosmetics,” she said. “I brought art to cosmetics and we teach customers how to apply makeup correctly.”

Senna Cosmetics has grown to five locations in Southern California, including Santa Clarita, Beverly Hills, Corona del Mar and the San Fernando Valley.

Weston said among the biggest mistakes women make is making their eyebrows too thin.

She created the Form-A-Brow kit in 1992 to help women with their brows.

Weston’s career continued to blossom with work in television and movies.

Among her celebrity clientele was Bette Midler.

“I did all her movies, all her shows, all her covers, everything,” said Weston.

In her 42-year career Weston has worked with a host of celebrities, that in addition to Midler have included Linda Gray, Paula Abdul, Ashley Simpson, Leslie Ann Warren and Alfre Woodard, among others.

Weston also worked with legendary photographer Helmut Newton.

“People in the beauty business really thought I was hot stuff working with Helmut Newton,” she said.

Weston has been married 37 years to David Weston. They have two children, Theda and Alex.

“My husband has been so supportive during my career,” she said. “He was really the first Mr. Mom in the SCV.”

When Weston thinks of her long career in the beauty industry she is quick to point out the changes.

“Technology has really changed the beauty industry,” she said. “There’s a lot of science involved now. It’s very exciting.”

Weston said another thing that has changed is the increase in competition.

“When I started there were department store lines and a few drug store lines but there weren’t any makeup artistry lines,” she said.

Weston, a true pioneer in the business of beauty, said she enjoys bringing beauty to women.

“I’ve never done anything else,” she said. “I love it every day.”
