A majority of Santa Clarita residents questioned believe the city is moving in the right direction and oppose the proposed Cemex mine, according to a public opinion poll commissioned by the city.

Eighty percent of the 400 adults surveyed said they trust or strongly trust the city to give them credible information about what’s happening in the Santa Clarita Valley, the poll said. When asked if the city was on the right track, 44 percent said they strongly approve and 38 percent said they approve.

When given a brief description of the proposed 56-million-ton sand and gravel mine in Soledad Canyon in Canyon Country, 64 percent said they oppose the plan and 47 percent said they strongly oppose. Seventy-three percent of residents said they oppose the mine after being told the city is against it.

Sixty-six percent of residents said they felt the city’s financial situation was stable or somewhat stable.
