After starting the game slow, Saugus battled in the second half but was unable to comeback against Simi Valley as they fell 19-12 Friday at College of the Canyons.

Both teams traded possessions in the first quarter, which ended in a scoreless tie.

The Pioneers broke the tie with 8:31 left in the second quarter when quarterback Cody Daste hooked up with wide receiver Tyler Robertson for an 18-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.

The touchdown was set up by a 35-yard completion down the left sideline from Daste to Connor Hale, which brought Simi Valley (1-0) into striking distance.

Saugus (1-1) threatened on their next possession, but quarterback Chris Hamilton’s interception ended the Centurions’ potential game-tying possession.

Hamilton finished the game 20–for-38 for 295 yards and a touchdown to go along with two interceptions.

His second interception came late in the game to end another possible scoring drive.

Later in the second, Saugus’ Vincent Gerardo fumbled deep in Centurion field position, which set up the second Simi Valley touchdown.

Ruben Sifuentes capped off the four-play Simi Valley scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 3:41 left in the second quarter.

Saugus blocked the ensuing extra point and trailed 13-0 at halftime.

The Pioneers extended the lead after their opening possession as Daste found Hale for a 19-yard touchdown with 10:40 left in the third.

Saugus got a spark from Dakota Taylor, who blocked a Simi Valley field-goal attempt with just over 6:30 left in the third quarter.

The ball was returned to the 42-yard line of Simi Valley, where the Centurions went on to execute an eight-play scoring drive, capped off by a 1-yard keeper by Hamilton into the end zone.

The Centurions continued to make the game interesting as they cut the lead to 19-12 after Hamilton hit Austin Gomes for a 43-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline with 6:38 left in the fourth quarter.

Gomes finished with five catches for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Similar to the first half, Sifuentes intercepted Hamilton for the second time with just over a minute left in the game as Saugus was driving to potentially tie the score.

Returning Foothill League Lineman of the Year, senior Denley Rodriguez, sat out Friday’s game with an injury.
