The evening of Tuesday, Aug. 28 was a double blessing for the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center. The Santa Clarita City Council presented a proclamation to SCV Senior Center staff, officially recognizing September 2012 as National Senior Center Month and Sept. 16-22 as National Adult Day Services Week. The Committee on Aging, staff, guests and volunteers at the SCV Senior Center deeply appreciate this recognition by the Santa Clarita City Council.

With a unanimous vote later that night, the council approved a contribution of $100,000 to the SCV Committee on Aging for the SCV Senior Center’s home-delivered meal program. This extraordinary donation comes at a time when 61 seniors are on a waiting list to receive home-delivered meals. The city funds will allow us to remove those seniors from the waiting list and provide them with a nutritious meal and the smile and encouragement of a volunteer home-delivered meal driver for five days a week for nearly a year.

The public comments of support at the City Council meeting and the council’s action are powerful reminders of the generous and compassionate nature of citizens of the Santa Clarita community. On behalf of the staff, volunteers and members of the SCV Senior Center, I offer our deepest and sincerest gratitude to the City Council.
