Residents have until midnight Wednesday to take advantage of the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District's automatic water softener rebate at 100 percent of the reasonable value of their unit between $275 and $2,000.

After Thursday, residents will be compensated only 75 percent of their unit's value, according to a district official.

On. Nov. 4, Santa Clarita Valley residents approved Measure S, which bans the use of all automatic water softeners.

The ban, a tool to reduce chloride (salts) in wastewater, goes into effect Jan. 1 and requires all residents to remove their units within 180 days.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District will continue to offer rebates to automatic water softener owners and pay for removal and disposal.
