Cheri and Don Fleming relax in Hawaii after the installation of Cheri Fleming as president-elect at the biennial convention of Soroptimist International of the Americas.

Cheri Fleming ascended to the national stage during the 42nd Biennial Convention of Soroptimist International of the Americas.

Fleming, a member of Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita Valley, was installed as President-elect of the organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, during ceremonies held in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Currently Fleming is the Secretary/Treasurer of Soroptimist International of the Americas,  will assume her new office of president-elect effective Sept. 1.

She will become president of the organization on Sept. 1, 2013.

“I’m really excited,” she said.

Fleming said the installation was held very quickly.

“It’s not a very formal process,” she said. “However, it’s a huge honor. When you get to be a part of the leadership at this level it’s about the good work we do, than the big pomp and circumstance of a big installation.”

Since conventions are held only every two years, her installation as president will be held at a regular board meeting in Philadelphia.

Fleming said nearly 1,600 members of Soroptimist International of the Americas attended the convention. They represented 19 countries and territories.

Fleming said she spent 10 days in Hawaii working on various aspects of Soroptimist business, including the convention, and had only one day off.

Among the convention highlights was the “Friendship Dinner.”

“Everyone attends wearing their native dress,” she said. “The representatives from the Philippines have these gorgeous gowns and the Japanese wear their kimonos and the Koreans look like dolls. It’s really an amazing thing to see.”

The SCV sent a number of members representing the two Soroptimist International clubs in the area, Soroptimist International of SCV and Soroptimist International of Greater SCV.

“As Secretary/Treasurer I stood on the big stage and gave the financial report using a Teleprompter,” she said. “It’s one of the most significant things I’ve had the honor to be a part of.”

Fleming will continue to serve as secretary/treasurer and president-elect, until she becomes the president.

Fleming encouraged women and girls to visit, a new website designed by Soroptimist to connect and assist women and girls.
