Saugus Union hires new facilities manager

District charges him with overseeing Emblem construction completion

Saugus Union School District officials hired a new facilities director this week whose job will include overseeing construction at much-delayed Emblem Elementary School.

“We want to make sure we continue getting Emblem completed,” school Superintendent Joan Lucid said during a board meeting late Tuesday. “We’ve asked (the new facilities director) to get there on site, and we’re also looking at our whole facilities master plan.”

The meeting was preceded by a tour of the Emblem campus, which officials say will open in the 2013-14 school year.

The district broke ground on the school upgrade nearly 2 1/2 years ago, but construction languished, to the anger of some neighborhood parents. In March the district hired a construction management firm to oversee completion, which is now expected in November.

The district hired John Grow, a state-licensed architect, as its new facilities director. Grow has a lot of experience with school construction, Lucid said.

Meantime, the district is reviewing responses it received from approximately 800 Emblem parents in the 10,000-student district.

Of those surveyed, 304 respondents said they would like to see Emblem Elementary with a science, technology, math and engineering focus, as opposed to a language arts or visual and performing arts focus, according to district data.

Of the languages where parents would like to see instructional focus, 345 parents chose Spanish, 132 parents chose Chinese and 84 parents chose Korean.
