SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Officials say a major Northern California wildfire that threatened thousands of homes and led to a massive evacuation is about to be fully contained.

CalFire spokeswoman Julie Hutchinson said firefighters should have the Ponderosa Fire 100 percent contained sometime Wednesday evening. She says nearly 1,700 firefighters are mopping up some of the remaining hot spots.

The blaze, located about 25 miles from Redding, has consumed more than 43 square miles and has destroyed more than 142 structures since it started burning nearly two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, evacuation orders are still in effect for 300 residents in northwest Siskiyou County as the fast-moving Goff Fire continues to threaten about 80 homes in Seiad Valley.

Fire spokesman Duane Lyon said Wednesday that containment lines set by some 600 firefighters are managing to control the blaze so far. The fire is 16 percent contained.
