This is the first of a series of reports from the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla. where Santa Clarita resident Lynn Haueter is a delegate. Her husband, Bob, is an alternate.

Hurricane Isaac, which was nearby in the Gulf of Mexico, didn’t manage to dampen the enthusiasm of delegates to the Republican convention in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday as they got down to business.

The Haueters joined 2,286 delegates and 2,125 alternate delegates this week to nominate the Republican candidates for U.S. president and vice president.

In November, Lynn Haueter was elected chairwoman of the Los Angeles County Republican Party.

Haueter said she’s excited to be a delegate in Tampa.

“I’m so inspired,” she said.

“I was very inspired to hear (Chris) Christie speak,” she said of the New Jersey governor who was one of the convention’s featured speakers.

“He’s done a lot as governor and we need someone like him.”

Haueter said the couple was meeting a lot of people and making lots of friends.

Hurricane Isaac, although traveling north through Louisiana, disrupted transportation for many bound for the convention, Haueter reported.

Convention organizers canceled the speeches and presentations scheduled for Monday — the opening day of the four-day event — but not the Monday night parties at Tropicana Field.
