2012 Grizzlies JV preview: Learning all over again

Last season, Golden Valley JV head coach John Quam came excruciatingly close to establishing the Grizzlies as a relevant league opponent multiple times.

“Last year, we had a lead against Hart at the half, lost in the final seconds against Canyon and put up 20 unanswered against Saugus, Quam said. “There’s a lot of work involved, but it shows because even if we didn’t win in league, we sure competed.”

Perhaps this year Quam will have to work even harder, as he inherits the remnants of a freshman team that posted an 0-10 record in 2011.

With less than 30 men on the 2012 roster, the JV Grizzlies will try to wash away the sour taste of 2011’s misfortunes and rebound with a few upset victories.

“We begin from the beginning,” Quam said. “We’re treating these players like it’s their first time playing football all over again.”

On defense, that sentiment is literally the case, with the Grizzlies implementing a 3-4 scheme that’s new to basically all of the players.

The transition has been made easier by the players — who came into summer practices stronger, faster and more aggressive than expected.

Additionally, the small roster size and historically brutal temperatures have served as unintentional conditioning drills throughout camp, ensuring that Golden Valley will have some of the toughest athletes in the Foothill League this upcoming season.

Almost all of Golden Valley’s impact players will make their presence felt on both sides of the ball. Dominic Fernandez will play at running back, outside linebacker, and safety. Alex Jauregui will be seen at nose guard, tight end and fullback. Fernando Osorio will play middle linebacker and running back.

Perhaps the most crucial part of Golden Valley’s success is the adjustments that Isaiah Truchess makes to playing the quarterback position.

Despite never playing under center before 2012, Truchess is one of the league’s elite athletes, which the coaches hope make the transition a seamless one.

The 2012 JV Grizzlies have shown with their dedication that they want to win, now the only question is, can they?
