Giving means more than gifts and food drives during the holiday, according to an American Red Cross employe.

Power Ford on Creekside Road and the American Red Cross are hosting a blood drive until 5 p.m. today.
The American Red Cross hopes to collect 24 pints, Nurse Melissa McIntosh said. The blood drive started at 11 a.m., she said.

"People aren't donating as much blood," she said. McIntosh, 25, said it could be numerous factors including the economy that is slowing blood donations.

However, one thing hasn't changed. Giving during the holidays often means donating blood. "Blood donations go up during the holiday season," she said.

Steven Jones, finance manager for Power Ford, donated a pint of his O-negative blood this morning. "It feels like it's the right thing to do," he said.

Jones' blood type makes him a universal donor. His blood is compatible with recipients of all blood types and that makes him a commodity, McIntosh said.
