A Castaic man died after his pickup truck crashed into a tree early Sunday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Anthony Friel, 45, of Servilla Place in Castaic, died after having suffered a “massive head wound,” CHP Sgt. Rick Miler said in a media release issued Sunday.

Shortly before 1:15 a.m. Sunday, Friel was traveling northbound on Interstate 5 “in an unknown lane at an unknown speed” in his black 2008 Toyota pickup truck, Miler said.

His truck crashed between Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway, according to one witness.

“Friel allowed his vehicle to leave the roadway where it collided with a sign,” Miler said. “After striking the sign the vehicle went airborne and struck a large tree.

Friel, the sole occupant of his black pickup truck, suffered fatal injuries.

Six firefighters from Fire Station No. 126 used a yellow stretcher-style basket to remove Friel’s body from the crash.

His truck was found crumpled against a stone wall, near the damaged tree.

No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the crash, Miler said.

The crash is still under investigation.

Friel, who has lived in various parts of the Santa Clarita Valley over the past 24 years, graduated from Saugus High School and worked as a stagehand, according to his Facebook page online.
