IRWINDALE (AP) — A man and a woman are hospitalized with serious injuries after their car fell about 150 feet into a Southern California rock quarry.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Gerald Gonzalez said it was "pretty amazing" that the two survived the early Saturday plunge into the abandoned quarry in Irwindale.

He said the pair was riding on a street when their Infiniti sedan continued straight through a T-intersection, broke through a metal guard rail and dropped into the quarry below. Gonzalez told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune the sedan's engine compartment was smashed, but the passenger compartment was relatively intact.

The Irwindale Police Department was investigating the cause of the crash.
