Letter: Opinions evolving will build consensus

With opinions in general, everyone seems to know — but I theorize that knowing is not the purpose of opinions. An opinion is not something you know — it’s something to share and discuss with others as you work to find the common ground, find what works, what doesn’t and adapt it to those specifications.

We hold our opinions so steadfast and so rigid; we seem barreling into another civil war at the current rate of no compromise.

Everyone feels attacked and everyone feels like they don’t have enough power or enough influence, but this is problematic in itself. What is power or influence but control? And why do you want control but to change things — but how do you know your opinion, your ideas are correct? Did you check them with someone of a differing opinion?

How will it affect that person’s life? Do you care?

I believe we are at a point where many of our representatives’ answer to that question would be, “No, I don’t care.”

As voters, as representatives, as people of this nation, we need to work to expand our minds and grow our thinking far, far outside ourselves.

This nation is not just about what you want; it’s about what works for all of us, and it will constantly evolve as people do.

This means our minds, our thoughts, our opinions must also evolve; don’t fight this, just work harder to see the value of all our thoughts, not just those of the people who reaffirm your thinking.
