Soroptimist International of Greater Santa Clarita Valley recently installed its new board of directors.

Heading up the group is returning President Sue Reynolds.

Also on the board are Kris Hough, Pam Ingram, Jessica Miller, Karen Schnurr, Bonnie Stauch, Luana Minor, Vanessa Wilk, Valerie Chase, Laura Kirchhoff and Pam Oneby.

Soroptimist International of Greater SCV includes a membership of more than 70 SCV business-women, from retirees to those just beginning their careers.

The mission of the club is dedicated to improving resources for women and girls.

In her address to the club during her installation, Reynolds said the focus of the club is to help women locally and around the world.

“Women are homeless. Women are still paid less than men. Women around the world are being used as tools of war. Women are dying in childbirth. Women are hungry and have no clean water for their children,” she said. “Women are struggling for education instead of ignorance. Women are aging in squalor. Women are even hurting themselves — they’re drinking, taking drugs, cutting themselves. Women are being beaten. Women are dying. But we can, and are, taking action.”

Soroptimist International of Greater SCV hosts such well-known events such as the upcoming Wine Affair on Oct. 21 (www.thewineaffair.org), the fashion celebration planned for St. Patrick’s Day in 2013, and other hands-on service activities.

The most-recent fundraiser hosted by the club was the High Heel-a-Thon to Stomp Out Domestic and Teen-Dating Violence (www.highheelathon.org).

Proceeds from the club’s fundraising events support predominantly local needs.

The club recently founded the College of the Canyons “Educating Women to Lead” scholarship, with emphasis on needful women and female veterans educating themselves for the workforce (www.canyons.edu).

Soroptimist is an international volunteer service organization founded in 1921 for business and professional women of all ages, cultures and ethnic groups. The mission of this organization is to improve the lives of women and girls in the SCV and throughout the world.
