BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — A major rush hour accident involving five vehicles has closed down Interstate 5 in both directions near Burbank, leaving a big rig jackknifed in the center divider and thousands of commuters and travelers stuck as a key artery is lost at the busiest of times.
The California Highway Patrol reports that five vehicles were involved in the wreck that was reported at 5:02 p.m. Friday and diesel fuel spilled into several lanes.
Helicopter footage from ABC7 shows the traffic corridor backed up for miles in both north and south directions on the freeway at Hollywood Way, the main exit for Burbank airport.
It is unclear if there have been any injuries.
The shutdown leaves commuters to northern L.A. County and travelers to Central and northern California without a key route.
