Under first year head coach Rowel Alfarero, the West Ranch freshman football team is looking for a bounce-back season in 2012.

Finishing with a 5-4-1 record last year, the Wildcats believe they have the right pieces in place to compete for a Foothill League title.

“Our goal is go undefeated every year,” said offensive coordinator Jesus Henao speaking on behalf of the team. “From the moment we got our pads on we preached to the kids that winning is a habit.”

Hoping to get in good habits to begin the season, West Ranch will rely on a balanced offensive attack as well as a solid linebacking corps in 2012.

In the backfield, quarterback Brett Bauernfeind and running back Joseph Rodriguez are the impact players on offense for the Wildcats.

“Our quarterback is a pretty good thrower and very smart behind the ball,” Henoa said. “Rodriguez is not only shifty and hard to tackle, but he’s a strong runner who will also lay the hit.”

Rodriguez will do most of his damage running behind offensive tackles Travis Bird and Charles McCarthy.

“Both (Bird and McCarthy) are very strong and starting to hit on all cylinders. They put in a lot of work this summer and they’re just now beginning to gel,” Henao said.

Defensively, with holes on the line and safety positions, the linebackers and cornerbacks are the strengths for West Ranch on that side of the ball.

From their linebacker positions, the Wildcats will rely on Cade Spurlin and Hunter Hayes to control the opposition’s running game, while corners John Kim and Caleb Scott hope to prevent big plays in the air.

“Our linebackers overall are very smart and have that nose for the football,” Henao said. “We’re going to have a big hitting team this season.”

The Wildcats will start the season at home on Thursday when they take on Moorpark.
