Betty Arenson: Negative ads detract from real campaigns

There’s a clear choice in the 2012 presidential election. Mitt Romney believes in capitalism and allowing self-respecting American workers to exercise their ingenuity to make the US’ clock tick, and President Barack Obama wrongly believes only the government can provide everything for nearly everyone. That core difference is smothered by the slimy culling of the dirtiest presidential campaign ever.

A president should be able to run on his past performance. Historically Obama destroys his adversaries on a personal basis rather than hail his own record. It happened with the unsealing and publication of Jack Ryan’s divorce records in the 2004 Illinois Senate race and “playing the race card on me” on Bill Clinton supporting Hillary in 2008. In 2012 the practice is at full speed.

Attacking spouses and children used to be off-limits. Not now. Ann Romney has lead a scandal-free life, raised five equally scandal-free successful sons, suffers from multiple sclerosis and is a breast cancer survivor but she is not immune to viciousness from the left like Hilary Rosen and Bill Maher. Rosen, a repeat White House visitor, works for Anita Dunn, former White House communication director, and also consults with Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz as a Democrat strategist and lobbyist. She publicly derided Ann Romney for “never working a day in her life.” Ann Romney had the class to not discuss Rosen’s lifestyle. The class-deprived Maher spoke of Ann Romney with profanity then bragged of his $1 million donation to Obama’s cause.

A president believing in and pronouncing America’s exceptionalism ought to be inherent. Democrats assail Mitt Romney for his self-earned wealth as a venture capitalist. Irrationally, his reported $250 million fortune is scandalous while uber-liberal venture capitalist, super PAC creator, George Soros, is lauded for his $22 billion. Soros garnered the title “the Man Who Broke the Bank of England” in 1992’s “Black Wednesday UK Currency Crisis” when fund groups he controlled nearly toppled Britain’s economy.

Integrity from the top should be indispensable. Another Democrat diversion is Mitt Romney’s taxes. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., cowardly chose the immunity of the Senate floor to spout, with absolutely no verification, that Mitt Romney hasn’t paid “any taxes” in 10 years. While that lie prods the uninformed to think Mitt Romney acted illegally, other Democrats say Mitt Romney legally took advantage of every tax code provision available — like billionaires Soros and Warren Buffett.

The tax lie is outdone by the manufactured story of Joe Soptic’s wife dying because Bain/Mitt Romney took his job and health insurance. Factually, she had her own insurance, lost her job and died seven years after Mitt Romney left Bain; who previously offered Soptic a job buy-out. Obama’s camp unsuccessfully hid their knowledge of the purported Super Pac ad with the surfacing of an earlier 2012 taped interview between Obama’s deputy campaign manager, Stephanie Cutter, and Soptic. The purposely edited deceitful version was aired, not exterminated.

Good judgment ought to be mandatory. Obama too often displays not taking the presidency seriously. He exhibits glib. He affords easy access to the White House Situation Room to friends. That area is the super-secret, super-guarded hub for all of our national security and military operations.

Irrespective of around-the-clock guarding by five watch teams, cheery photos were taken of music mogul rapper Jay-Z, wife Beyonce and others chatting in the Situation Room in March 2010. The Situation Room mandates somber men, not a celebrity party host-in-chief.

Character more than counts — it is imperative. I subscribe to the thought “show me who your friends are and I’ll show you who you are.” Obama’s history of close relationships with remorseless terrorist Bill Ayers, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, imprisoned Tony Resko, imprisoned Rod Blagojevich and more recently the wholly dishonest Stephanie Cutter types should give pause to everyone.

Democrats claim Mitt Romney is unvetted, not transparent and unexciting. That’s rich in light of the sitting president’s nebulous background. It’s a short step to believing Mitt Romney’s scandal-less life compelled the perverted ads. As for “unexciting” ... this is from the party who gave us John Kerry and Al Gore.

Voters must be vigilant, informed, recognize truth and decide what is decently befitting.

The Democrat’s practice of “Winning at any cost” is not a win for America.
