A failed attempt to steal two crystal bongs from a Saugus cigar store ended with a scuffle, shattered glass and one young woman in custody, a local sheriff’s sergeant said.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m., deputies of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station received 911 reports of a robbery at the Cigs 4 Sale shop on Bouquet Canyon Road at Haskell Canyon Road, Sgt. Rich Nagler said.

“A young lady went into the store and tried to steal a couple of crystal bongs,” he said, referring to foot-long glass tubes commonly used to inhale illegal drugs.

The woman grabbed the bongs and ran out of the store, he store.

“She grabbed them and ran,” Nagler said.

A female clerk behind the counter of the cigar store ran after the suspect.

The short pursuit caught the attention of hair dressers at the  Esthetics Design hair salon, next to the cigar store.

“The girl threw the bongs at her and ran towards the (Bouquet) street,” said salon worker Elyssa Weinoe.

“I got on the phone and phoned 911,” she said.

“She (clerk) went to grab the woman by the arm and the girl started hitting her,” Weinoe said.

The suspect was detained long enough for deputies who then took the woman into custody, Nagler said.

The cigar store clerk, shaken and crying from the confrontation, was not physically hurt and returned to her shop as sheriff’s deputies used brooms to clean up the broken glass from the strip mall sidewalk.

“I’m scared,” the clerk said, dabbing her eyes with a tissue, declining to give her name.
