Saugus had the advantage.

Unfortunately, it didn't last long.

The Centurions lost 3-2 to Palmdale High in their first of two matches in the Hart Showcase Tournament on Friday.

A throw-in from Chris Allen led to the Centurions' first goal after Jacob Sikich punched the ball into the net.

Shortly after, Saugus took a 2-0 lead when Erick Esquivel scored off a Manuel Garza assist.

But the Falcons made a comeback.

A deflection off a free kick led to Palmdale's first goal.

And after a penalty kick, the Falcons tied the game 2-2 at the end of the first half.

The second half, however, belonged to the Falcons.

After Palmdale scored off a cross, the Centurions fell into a 3-2 deficit.

"One of our worst defeats of the season," said Saugus head coach Seth Groller. "We had a lot of opportunities. We just weren't able to put one in the second half."

The Centurions' second game was less dramatic.

A 1-0 loss to Paraclete rounded out the Centurions' day.

Despite out-shooting the Spirits 18-5, Saugus struggled to convert those shots into goals.

"We had so many chances," Groller said. "I think the wind played a factor and they had the advantage on natural grass because we are so used to playing on our turf. But it's our fault. we just couldn't put it in the back of our net."

Paraclete scored its only goal off a deflection that went off a Saugus player.

The Centurions continue action in the Hart Showcase Tournament by facing the Hart Indians at 7:45 a.m. today.

"We're taking it as setting the tone for league," Groller said of the matchup with Hart. "I think it will be an evenly matched game. There's always a lot of parity in the Foothill League and we're going to see a lot of that."

In other action from the tournament, the Valencia Vikings boys varsity team tied both of its matches on the day.

Valencia started the day with a 3-3 tie against Glendale High.

Aubrey Gierard scored first off a cross assist from Ben Beiilin.

Renato Sanchez scored on a penalty kick and Greg Drake scored off an unassisted free kick.

The Vikings' second game of the day ended in a 2-2 tie against Los Angeles Baptist.

A missed penalty kick by Valencia at the end of the game secured the tie.

The Vikings (3-1-4) received a goal from Luke Peters, who scored on a header off a Drake free kick.

Eric Shannon scored the tying goal off a deflected shot from Jason Kent.
