Two Canyon Country men identified by prosecutors as street racers appeared briefly in court Monday on murder charges filed in the death of a third man.

Colt Sean Doherty, 19, and Thomas Joseph Vensko, 20, both of Canyon Country, appeared in San Fernando Superior Court on Monday morning.

Both were charged with murder on Aug. 8 in connection with the fatal crash seven months ago that claimed the life of 19-year-old Dakota Demott, also of Canyon Country.

On Monday, they were told to return to court Sept. 19 to be formally arraigned on the charges.

Demott died Jan. 10 when the Ford Mustang in which he was riding slammed into a tree on Sand Canyon Road at Alamo Canyon Road in Canyon Country.

“He was thrown out of the car and killed on Jan. 10, 2012, when the vehicle crashed while street racing a Honda driven by Vensko,” according to prosecutors.

The crash happened after the two cars left a fast-food restaurant at Sand Canyon Road shortly before 11 p.m. that night, prosecutors said two weeks ago.
