SAN BERNARDINO. (AP) — A San Bernardino County sheriff's detective was killed and a deputy was seriously injured when the vehicle they were traveling in crashed into a tractor-trailer that rolled over in front of them.

The San Bernardino Sun reports Martin Landaeta, a 14-year department veteran, died in the crash Saturday on the eastbound 40 Freeeway in Needles.

The injured deputy was not named.

Sheriff Rod Hoops tells the newspaper Landaeta was traveling with his wife and the unidentified deputy to Laughlin, Nev., for a two-day barbecue hosted by the sheriff's Colorado River station.

Landaeta's wife was not seriously injured.

Investigators will try to determine what caused the tractor-trailer to overturn. It's unknown whether the occupants of the tractor-trailer were hurt.

Hoops called it a "very sad day" for the department.
