SAN FERNANDO — The pretrial hearing for a Newhall man who allegedly hit a woman with his car, killing her on Orchard Village Road was continued Friday in San Fernando Superior Court.

Wearing a green polo shirt and khaki slacks, Jonathan Anker, 68, listened as his case was continued until Sept. 11.

Anker faces two charges — failing to remain at the scene of an accident and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs — for the February incident in which his car allegedly struck Saugus resident Dianda Doane as she walked in the driving lanes of Orchard Village Road in Valencia, then he allegedly left the scene as her body lay in the street.

However, Deputy Public Defender Cynthia S. Vargas, who represents Anker, denied Friday that drugs or alcohol were involved in the case.

“This is one of those situations where it’s very, very tragic for everyone involved,” Vargas said. “My understanding is that it was an accident.”

Anker posted bail the day after Doane was killed.

He refused to comment Friday outside of the courthouse.
